Piksels and Lines

This research meeting focuses on a critical assessment of current free and open technologies for image creation: both pixel, vector and generative softwares that support the creation and manipulation of visuals. In addition to project co-organizers and associate partners, we invite artists, designers and developers connected to CCC, GIMP, Inkscape, W3C (SVG-workinggroup), Pure Data, OpenRaster and Processing. A critical reflection on current technologies, as well as a brainstorm on improvements and potential connections between existing tools.

Considering your tools

Today’s creation largely depends on digital tools. Far from being a neutral mean to an artistic achievement, those tools are actually opinionated: they carry values and are full of conventions about the way things “ought” to be done. Because of this, we think it is crucial to raise awareness among practitioners in order to make software and machines into tools to think with (or against), and to let us speculate about future  Continue Reading »

Piksels and Lines research report

Piksels&Lines

The Piksels and Lines Orchestra is an experimental performance system for graphic design. The image industry populates our visual culture, yet it exists in a world with an inner life that is invisible to most people. The orchestra shifts the focus from the end results to the actions and decisions that take place during the creative process.

By turning the tools of graphic design,  Continue Reading »

Commissions

At the core of the LGRU-project is a series of research commissions that allowed artists and software developers to work together on projects that creatively re-think the way practice and tools interact. The results of this work are currently under review, but you can already enjoy some of the results here.

Turning tools into instruments

The Piksels and Lines Orchestra (PLO) If we turned our tools into instruments, could we experience Libre Graphics as an ensemble? What would be the performative potential of lay-out and drawing, and how to listen to the sound of a pixel, or to the tune of a line? In response to these curious questions, The [...]
